Brazil's livestock farmers suffer losses despite beef export growth

Brazilian livestock farmers have suffered losses despite the recent surge in beef exports which totalled US$ 295.8 million in June this year, or a 33 percent increase from June 2003.

Industry reports stated that prices farmers received for fattened cattle stock fell 11.3 percent between January and May this year, while their costs rose 4.29 percent.

In reaction to the loss of income, farmers reportedly spent less on inputs, thus compromising productivity and market share for Brazilian beef. In addition, Brazil's annual per capita beef consumption has fallen amid competition from other types of meat.
