Brazil's June pork exports down 16.76% to 43,913 tonnes

Brazil's pork exports dropped again in June, after rising in May, against a year before by 16.76% to 43,913 tonnes from 52,752 tonnes in June 2011 and 53,404 tonnes in May 2012.

Meanwhile, in the first half of 2012 pork exports rose 0.72% against the same period in 2011, to 268,783 tonnes. Export revenue fell 28.75% in June against a year earlier, after rising 9.27% against April 2012. In the first half of 2012 export revenue fell 6.52% against the same period in 2011, to US$687.3 million.

In addition to growing international competition, Brazilian pork exports have been hindered by bans from Russia, South Africa, Albania and Argentina.

According to Pedro Camargo Neto, the president of the Brazilian Association of Pork Farmers and Exporters (Abipecs), Brazil needs to enter other markets such as Japan, South Korea and the EU.

Despite a 52.87% in pork exports to Russia, that country is Brazil's second biggest buyer. Last month it bought 11,623 tonnes, of which 11,938 tonnes went to the Ukraine.
