Australia to export more red meat on lower domestic demand

Red meat producers in Australia are starting to look towards the export market as red meat becomes less popular at home, according to a report by ABC Rural.

The report said the average Australian consumes six-kg less beef per year compared to 20 years ago.

Last year, 64 percent of beef was exported.

Because red meat is falling out of favour, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resources Economics (ABARE) said this has caused export markets to become very important.

Australian consumers are starting to favour poultry and pork, especially in bad times when budgets are tight.
