Russia's poultry import for the first five months down 8 percent

Russia's poultry import fell 8 percent in the first five months of the year, to 426,900 tonnes, the federal customs service reported Monday (Jul 9).

The drop reflects the increasingly established poultry industry in the country and its capacity to supply the local population after a year of heavy investments.

Russia imported poultry worth US$330.8 million during the period compared with US$297.3 million a year earlier.

Its own poultry output this year is forecast by the agriculture ministry to increase 13.8 percent to 2.56 million tonnes from 2.25 million tonnes in 2006.
