Australia goat meat exports on decline
According to Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, goat meat exports have dropped 5% on-year in 2011-2012, due to falling international demand in major export markets and the volatility of the AUD.
Despite falling 15% on-year, the US remained the largest export destination for Australian goat meat in 2011-2012, accounting for 53% of the total market, at 12,989 tonnes. Exports to Taiwan fell 8% on-year, to 3,608 tonnes. These declines are attributed to a consistently high AUD and an increase in the supply of competing proteins, such as lamb and mutton throughout the year.
In contrast, shipments to the Caribbean increased 27% on-year to 3,053 tonnes, while shipments to Canada remained relatively steady at 1,799 tonnes.
