Record 2006/07 Argentina soybean harvest seen

Farmers in Argentina had harvested 99 percent of the 2006/07 soy crop, in line with last year's pace, according to the Secretariat. Just a small area in Buenos Aires Province remains for soy harvest.

The Secretariat sees a record 47.2 million metric tonnes of soybeans coming from the 2006/07 crop while the US Department of Agriculture pegs output at 46.5 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, corn farmers had harvested 94 percent of the 2006/07 crop, compared with 96 percent a year ago.

The Secretariat forecasts 22 million tonnes of corn coming from the 2006/07 crop.

Argentina's 2007/08 wheat planting slowed last week, with dry soil conditions and cold weather stalling progress in some areas, the Agriculture Secretariat said in its weekly crop report Friday (July 6).

As of July 5, farmers had planted 66 percent of the 5.5 million hectares seen going to wheat in the 2007/08 crop cycle, one point behind last year's planting pace. The planting pace had been 3 points ahead of last year from the other week.
