China and Asia to account for two-thirds of pork production increase

China and Asia in total, will account for two-thirds of the expansion in pork production this year, according to a United Nations FAO agrifoods agency report.

The report forecasted an increased meat production of 2.3 percent to about 283 million tonnes globally, with pork production reaching a new high of 110.7 million tonnes, a growth of more than 3 percent.

Countries with high economic growth is supporting the rise in per capita meat consumption.

The report noted that pork production has increased in many countries in recent years. However, higher feed prices are expected to dampen growth rates this year.
