Germany finds H5N1 Flu Virus in local poultry

German authorities have discovered the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus in domestic poultry for the first time this year, officials said Friday (July 6).

A goose in the town of Wickersdorf in the state of Thuringia was found to be infected with the virus, according to the Friedrich-Loeffler Institute.

The danger of infection spreading in the surrounding area was small because the infected bird lived on a small farm in a remote area, institute spokeswoman Elke Reinking said.

Nine other birds at the farm were culled as a precaution.
