Serbia's wheat yield expected to reach 1.88 million tonnes

The expected yield of wheat crops in 2011 is 1.88 million tonnes sown on 491,174 hectares, which is a 15.1% increase relative to the production output in 2010, according to data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia.

The data on the expected production of wheat presented on May 25 showed that this year's crop of bread wheat in Serbia will be 8.1% lower than the ten-year average from 2001 to 2010.

It is estimated that the expected wheat crops, along with the stock transferred from the previous season, will provide self-sustainability in the supply of the domestic population, and about 300,000 tonnes available for export, associate at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) Vojislav Stankovic stated.

The Serbian government has also decided Thursday (Jul 7) to purchase 100,000 tonnes of mercantile wheat of this year's crop for RSD20 (US$0.29) per kilogramme, VAT included, for the purpose of buffer stocks.

According to the Statistical Office, a total of 1.26 million hectares were sown with maize, 2.1% more compared to the previous year.

Soy was sown on 166,134 hectares, a 15.5% reduction compared to 2010.
