Australian beef output climbs in May
Beef production in Australia, the second-largest global exporter after Brazil, rose 0.6% in May from April and 2.2% from a year earlier to a seasonally adjusted 176,918 tonnes, the government's Bureau of Statistics reported Wednesday (Jul 7).
The total number of cattle slaughtered in May, excluding calves, was 648,017 beasts, up 0.9% on-month and up 2.6% on-year, it said.
Australia exports two thirds of its beef production to the major markets of Japan, the US, South Korea and South-east Asian nations, with the level of exports closely tied to production.
