Thai food vendors urge government intervention amid soaring egg prices
Food vendors in the Sriracha Municipal Market are asking the Thai government to manage rising egg prices, before they are forced to increase their prices of fried eggs and omelettes.
Chicken Feeder Association President Chaweewan Khampha revealed that announcements by the Egg Development Policy Committee to manage the egg problem will be as follow: immediate measures will be taken to decrease the price of eggs, extend the breeder hen's age, and decrease egg export; send the committee to study the system to resolve the egg problem management for 60 days and finally, long term policy adjustment in the purchase of breeding hens through fixed suppliers.
Khampha thought that the above policies were not the correct way to resolve the problem. She did not agree in decreasing exports that may result in the overrun of the quantity of eggs in the market following which, will create suffering for the chicken feeders. The right way to do this is to let the chicken farmers source the breeder hen themselves and stop the rule of having to buy from the nine fixed suppliers.
The costs for the farmer will then be lower. The main problems about eggs in her opinion were the quality of the breeder hens and the high cost in feed for the chickens.
