Indonesian shrimp exports seen to fall in 2009
Indonesia's shrimp exports are forecast to decline in 2009 with shrinking production and a surge in supply from other producing countries such as Thailand.
An official of the fishery ministry said grand harvest is taking place in Thailand resulting in falling prices making Indonesian shrimp less competitive.
Foreign marketing director Saut P Hutagalung said in the first quarter of this year the country's shrimp exports fell 9 per cent year-on-year.
Hutagalung said Indonesia would have an opportunity to regain foothold in export market in winter when supplies from other major producing countries like Thailand, China and Vietnam drop sharply.
