Vietnam imports nearly 60,000 tonnes meat in H1 2010
Vietnam imported about 60,000 tonnes of meat to ease domestic shortage in the first half of 2010, accounting for more than 66.6% of last year's total import volume, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

According to the ministry, major suppliers were Taiwan and China. Cattle and poultry diseases' spread forced the country to raise its meat import to meet domestic demand.

The blue-ear disease has affected 150,000 pigs in the northern and central regions, of which nearly 66,000 heads died or have been destroyed.

The General Statistics Office said that Vietnam produced 1.79 million tonnes of pigs in H1 2010, up 4.7%; 330.700 tonnes of poultry, up 17%; and 3.27 million poultry eggs, up 7.1% on-year.
