New York egg production lower than last year
 

Egg production on New York farms totalled 96 million eggs in May, a 6% decrease from last year, according to Stephen Ropel, US Agriculture Department National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office director.

The number of hens and pullets of laying age, at 3.89 million, decreased 4% from May 2009 and the rate of lay was 2,467 eggs per 100 layers, a 2% decrease from last year.

US egg production totalled 7.69 billion during May 2010, a 1% increase from last year. Production included 6.58 billion table eggs, and 1.11 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.04 billion were broiler-type and 73 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during May 2010 averaged 338 million, a slight increase from last year. May egg production per 100 layers was 2,276 eggs, a 1% increase from May 2009.

US egg-type chicks hatched during May 2010 totalled 43.1 million, a 6% increase from May 2009. Eggs in incubators totalled 39.3 million on June 1, 2010, a slight decrease from a year ago.
