Dominican Republic to control swine disease

The Agriculture Ministry of Dominican Republic and local pork producers will adopt the joint measures needed to declare the country free of classic swine fever so that meat can be exported, especially to the US.

Agriculture minister Salvador Jiménez met with the leading pork producers to deal with the situation of the sub-sector, which raises an average of more than 800,000 pigs yearly, and creates thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

In the meeting, producers from Santiago, Moca and La Vega asked the government to designate a commission to provide follow up on pork production, especially the measures needed to have healthy pig farms, the agriculture ministry said in a statement.
