CWT completes latest round of herd retirement

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) has finished its latest herd retirement round, removing 101,140 cows from 41 states that produced nearly two billion pounds of milk.

Most of the cows removed were in the western regions of the US, similar to CWT's previous herd retirement rounds.

CWT said 38,245 cows were removed from the West, followed by 43,121 from the Southwest, 8,153 from the Midwest, 6,400 from the Southeast and 5,121 from the Northeast. This round also removed 818 bred heifers.

CWT may have additional herd reduction activities this year, due to low milk prices and the continuing imbalance between supply and demand, said Jim Tillison, chief operating officer of CWT.
