Cudahy processed meat plant in Wisconsin damaged by large fire

The Patrick Cudahy processed-meat plant in Cudahy, Wisconsin, has suffered significant damage after a large fire broke out in the facility Sunday (July 5) evening.

Local officials reported that about 100 firefighters were called to the plant and worked throughout the night and into Monday morning.

The Associated Press reported that residents within a mile of the facility were advised to evacuate.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on its Web site said Cudahy city officials early Monday were continuing to urge residents within a one-mile radius of the plant to evacuate because of the smoke and possibilities of ammonia in the air.

Industry analysts said the company is a key producer of pepperoni and other dry-sausage products. The plant also produces pre-cooked bacon, ham and other processed-meat products.

Cudahy is a division of Smithfield Foods Incorporated. Parts of the plant have been in operation for more than 100 years.

Cudahy Fire Chief Dan Mayer said the fire has been difficult to fight because it is in a confined space, and there has been heavy fire, water and smoke damage, the AP reported.
