Malaysia's fresh milk price up RM2.50 per litre

Malaysian fresh milk has increased to RM2.50 per litre from RM1.85 following subsequent fuel price hikes.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said corn, soybean and palm kernel (PKC) has jacked up as a result of the oil price increase.

He said the new price rise should encourage local dairy farmers to continue efforts in increasing dairy milk and meat production in the country.

Musa, who also serves as the State Finance Minister, said the price surge will also include payment to farmers through the Department of Veterinary Services and Animal Industry (Dovsai).

He gave the approval during a press conference after he officiated the official opening of the State-level Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day 2008 celebration at the Rural Development Corporation (KPD) Marketing Complex in Tanjung Lipat, on July 5.

Earlier, Musa also urged farmers to upgrade their produce in compliance with global market requirements following reports that some EU states may ban Malaysian seafood products due to its failure in complying with existing standards.

Sabah will be the most affected as it is the country's major producer of aquaculture produce.

According to a report, Musa said Malaysia stand to lose RM1billion within a period of three months' ban, particularly Sabah, while urging the aquaculture developers, operators as well as exporters of its products to increase their research and development effort as well as obtain the recognised quality certification.
