E3 BioFuels launches US's first closed-loop ethanol plant

Press release

US-based E3 BioFuels-Mead LLC Jun 28 launched the country's first closed-loop ethanol plant in Mead, Nebraska.

The company invited media to cover the launch, to demonstrate firsthand its new closed-loop method of making ethanol without fossil fuels.

Besides the press conference, media members were also given a tour of the facility to see E3 BioFuels' pollution-saving ethanol production method in action next to a feedlot with 28,000 beef cattle.

Environmentally friendly because of its cutting-edge technology, the high-efficiency ethanol distillation system at the Genesis Plant gets its energy from biogas derived from cattle manure and cellulosic biomass.

In a patented closed-loop system that does not use fossil fuels, leftover grain is fed wet to the cattle at the nearby feedlot. The cattle manure in turn powers the plant and creates high-quality fertiliser as a by-product.

The company said its system recycles animal manure into energy instead, protecting the environment from the potential of manure runoff - a significant challenge for livestock farmers - and avoiding emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

"The E3 BioFuels system lets America get its automotive fuel from the croplands of the Midwest instead of the oilfields of the Mideast," said Dennis Langley, President and CEO of E3 BioFuels.
