Indonesia's June meat imports fall below quota
Indonesia imported 54,000 tonnes of meat in June, an amount still below the ceiling of 73,000 tonnes put in the approval letter (SPP) by the director general of animal husbandry, Indonesian agriculture ministry officer Tjetjep D Soedjana said.
"We wish imports will only be done to meet shortage at home," he said.
Tjetjep had made a commitment with importers that until the end of this year the import volume must equal the shortage in domestic stocks that had been calculate before, and Indonesia would not import meat excessively.
The meats imported into the country consist of prime cut or best quality meat, secondary cut, innards and various other kinds of meat, he added.
Imports of prime cut and secondary cut would be reduced from 22 kinds now to only 18 kinds while imports of innards and various other kinds of meat would be scrapped.
Tjeppy said as an effort to reduce the volume of meat imports his office would only issue SPP twice a year or issue it once in six months.
"The policy is taken to promote the programme of meat self-sufficiency by 2014," he said.
