Think tank ups China's 2007 corn, wheat output forecasts

The China National Grain and Oils Information Centre (CNGOIC) has raised its 2007 corn output forecast by 2 million tonnes as more farmers are switching to planting the crop because it offers higher profits.

In its monthly report issued Wednesday (July 4), the government think tank said corn output will rise to 149 million tonnes, up from an earlier forecast of 147 million tonnes, on revised acreage.

It raised its wheat output by 2 million tonnes to 107 million tonnes this year, despite a decline in acreage forecast of 400,000 hectares.

The output growth is due to improved per hectare output because of better seed quality, said the centre that is affiliated with the State Grain Administration.

The agency also adjusted its previous forecasts of some crops' planting area in 2006.
