Poultry research and development company, Cobb-Vantress, Inc has appointed Christine Daugherty as the company's new chief technology officer.

Daugherty will lead a cross-functional team to establish external research strategies and collaborations with academic institutions and other research partners.

In addition to her scientific background, Daugherty has familiarities with legal matters and will oversee intellectual property, patents, competitive intelligence and other scientific research.

Prior to her appointment in Cobb-Vantress, Daugherty previously served as Tyson Foods' corporate attorney in 2003, and dealt with regulatory compliance, food safety, animal welfare and intellectual property. More recently, she was made the director of intellectual property and technology development, and led a company-wide programme which helped provide scientific solutions for global food challenges. She also managed patent portfolio and provided scientific liaison with customers, trade associations, government officials and research institutions.

Daugherty holds a doctorate degree on gene expression, from the Louisiana State University (US), and a law degree from the University of Arkansas. She was once awarded a federal grant, from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to conduct research which ultimately led to in-flight experimentations aboard the space shuttle, Columbia, in 1997. The study explores the effect of microgravity and space flight on genetic activity and plant growth.
