Australian May beef output fell 2.1 percent on-month

Beef production in Australia, the second-biggest global exporter after Brazil, fell 2.1 percent on month in May to a seasonally adjusted 173,189 tonnes and was down 4.5 percent from May 2008, the government's Bureau of Statistics reported Friday.

The total number of cattle slaughtered in May, excluding calves, at 631,787 beasts, fell 3.4 percent on month and was down 6.3 percent on year, it said.

The bureau doesn't explain movements in the figures.

Australia exports two-thirds of its beef production to the major markets of Japan, the US, South Korea and Southeast Asian nations.

The level of exports is closely tied to production.
