Indian swine farm reports first outbreak of PRRS
India has reported its first outbreak of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) on a swine farm in Aizawal district of the Mizoram state, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
This is the first time that PRRS has been identified in the history of India though the source of outbreak is unknown. Since this is the first time that porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome is identified in the history of the country, the reason for notification as first occurrence applies to the country but the event is in fact circumscribed to a zone.
In response to the outbreak, various control measures have been taken which includes: quarantine, movement control inside the country, screening, disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s), and treatment of affected animals
About 305 pigs are susceptible, with 57 infected and 10 deaths reported.
