ARS researchers find resistance genes in sunflower
                 Â
ARS researchers have found sunflower genes that could resist insects and yield-reducing Verticillium and Sclerotinia fungi.
Â
The scientists, in collaboration with researchers worldwide, have found unique genes for resistance to downy mildew, rust, Sclerotinia diseases, and two insect pests, the red sunflower seed weevil (RSSW) and the banded sunflower moth (BSM).
Â
These genes form the basis for new and improved sunflower breeding lines.Â
Â
A RSSW- and BSM-resistant germplasm has been developed and experimental hybrids from those will be tested later this year. Preliminary results will be available at year-end.
