EU Parliament urges ban on cloning animals for food

European Parliament members have adopted a draft resolution urging for a ban on the cloning of animals for food supply.

The Parliament's Agriculture Committee voted unanimously for a resolution that would request the Commission to ban the production of cloned animals for food in the EU as well as imports of cloned animals and associated products.

Cloned products are yet to be marketed in the EU but the Agriculture Committee resolution requested the Commission to rule out the use of any cloned products in the EU if they enter the market in the future.

Experts said produce from cloned animals could be done by 2010. The US Food and Drug Administration had also stated that food products from cloned animals do not pose greater risk than products from conventionally farmed animals.
