In Uthai Thani province, surveys revealed that sugar retail prices have shot up to 28 baht (US$0.86) per kilogramme while certain shops were faced with sugar shortages.
Prices of chicken and duck eggs here are at 4-5 baht (US$0.12-0.15) per piece.
A zoologist at Phitsanulok's Rajamangala Lanna Institute of Technology, Assistant Professor Boonchoo Nawanukroh, said the rising egg prices are caused by egg shortages in chicken farms due to expensive animal feed.
He added the problem can be solved by encouraging more chicken farms to reduce the expense on the feed.
