Indiana hog inventory down slightly in June
Indiana producers had a total inventory of 3.5 million hogs and pigs on June 1, 2009, down 4 percent from a year earlier, according to the US Department of Agriculture's Indiana Agricultural Statistics.
Market hogs, at 3.2 million head were 4 percent below last year. Breeding inventory, at 270,000 head, was 7 percent below the previous year.
Sows farrowed totalled 135,000 during the March-May 2009 quarter, down 7 percent from a year ago.
Pig crop, at 1.27 million head, decreased 4 percent from last year with a litter rate averaging 9.40, up 3 percent from 2008.
Indiana producers intend to farrow 135,000 sows during both the June-August 2009 period and the September-November 2009 period.
If realized, farrowings during the June-August 2009 period would be down 10,000 (7 percent), and the September-November 2009, would be down 5,000 (4 percent) from the previous year.
