Vietnam to allocate more land for aquaculture

As part of the Vietnamese government's master plan, the agricultural sector would be required to replace rice cultivation on 102,000 ha of land with aquaculture and cultivation of other crops, while expanding cultivated land by about 120,000-150,000 ha annually.

Vietnam's targeted agricultural breakdown by 2010 would be 65 percent for cultivation, 30 percent for husbandry and 5 percent for services. The goal would be to accelerate the average growth rate of agro-forestry and fishery production value to between 4 and 4.5 percent.

The government has set a target of earning US$11 billion from exports of farm, forest products and seafood by 2010.
