US poultry production rose for May
 
 
US poultry production was 3.856 billion pounds for May, a rise of 1% from the same period of 2011, according to the USDA.

 

Most of that was chicken at 3.326 billion pounds, also up 1% on year, with turkey at 519.896 million pounds, 5% higher than a year ago, and duck at 10.336 million pounds, up 2%.

 

The preliminary live weight of all poultry was 5.110 billion pounds, 1% more than last year, with chicken also up 1% at 4.445 billion pounds, turkey increasing 5% to 650.756 million pounds, and duck up 2% at 14.288 million pounds.

 

The average live weight of all chicken was pretty much steady on the year at 5.82 pounds per bird, while turkey decreased slightly to 29.84 pounds, and the duck average was also down modestly at 6.79 pounds.

 

Ante-mortem condemnations were 10.126 million pounds or 0.20% of the inspected live weight, while post-mortem condemnations were 35.863 million pounds, 0.92% of quantities inspected.

 

For the year to date US poultry production is 18.067 billion pounds, a little bit less than the January to May 2011 total of 18.123 billion pounds.
