Thailand allowed to export more poultry to EU from July

Thai exporters would be able to export more poultry to the European Union at low tariffs under a revised quota system effective Jul. 1, Foreign Trade Department Director General Apiradi Tantraporn said Tuesday (Jun 26).

The EU has given Thailand the largest annual export quota allocation of 252,643  tonnes, of which 160,033 tonnes would be processed chicken and 92,610 tonnes salted poultry.

Salted poultry within the quota would be taxed at 15.4 percent, while shipments exceeding the quota would be taxed at THB1,300/tonne. Cooked chicken within the quota would be taxed at 8 percent, and any excess would be taxed at THB1,024/tonne.

The new system aims to protect the EU market from being flooded with cheap imports from developing countries, especially Brazil and Thailand

The EU is Thailand's second-biggest export market for the product after Japan.
