South Africa 2007/08 corn crop projections remain at 7 million tonnes

South Africa's Crop Estimate Committee (CEC) on Tuesday (June 26) left its fifth corn production forecast for the 2007/08 season unchanged at 7.050 million tonnes.

The crop still consists of 4.155 million tonnes of white corn and 2.895 million tonnes of yellow corn.

"There was no new information on the table to justify an adjustment," said Rona Beukes, a CEC member.

This was after the committee lifted the crop by 1.3 percent, or 90,000 tonnes, to 7.050 million tonnes last month due to higher yields per hectare in the Free State province.

Other crops for the summer season were sunflower at 308,580 tonnes, up 2.24 percent, and soya unchanged at 218,600 tonnes.
