Australia's pork to receive funding boost for marketing
Australia's pork will receive an increase of AUD1.2 million (US$1.13 million) for its marketing budget.
Levies, which farmers have to pay for marketing per pig, will increase by AUD0.30 (US$0.28) on July 1.
The funds will be used to encourage the consumption of pork," according to Andrew Spencer from Australian Pork Limited.
"We measure fresh pork consumption per capita, every year. That number is at present sitting around 9.1 - 9.2 kilogrammes (of pork eaten every year). We'd like to, over the next five years or so, move that up towards 10 kilogrammes," Spencer said.
The increase means that pig farmers will pay just over AUD3 (US$2.82) per pig which, at current prices, equates to a kilogramme of meat per animal in levies.
APL says that it is looking to build on past successful campaigns.
