The largest poultry processing companies in Romania have reported at least 30-percent increase of sales in the first five months of 2009 compared to the same period last year.

The sales increase was due to investments made in Transavia, Agricola Bacau, Agroli Group and Ave Impex a year ago, as well as the consumers' changing preference to cheaper food products.

Deliveries of chicken for meat in January to April this year exceeded 110,000 tonnes or EUR250 million, up 26 percent on-year, according to figures by the Romanian Association of Poultry Breeders.

The poultry meat is one of the few segments in the food industry that reported increases in the first half of 2009, as other cold cut producers reported stagnation in first quarter sales and the dairy market saw sales contracting by 20 percent.
