Huon Aquaculture to acquire Southern Ocean Trout

Australian Atlantic salmon producer Huon Aquaculture is set to acquire Southern Ocean Trout and the move could boost the former's turnover and sales.

Huon will take over Southern Ocean's 80-hectare lease in Macquarie Harbour and a processing plant in Strahan as well as a hatchery site on the Derwent River. The acquisition will give Huon a product range that includes ocean trout in addition to its Atlantic salmon.

Huon's co-owner Peter Bender plans to farm Atlantic salmon in Macquarie Harbour and wants to grow an additional 300,000 tonnes of fish per year, according to an ABC News report.

Bender said that would boost the company's turnover and sales by 20 percent.

The harbour's deep, brackish water layer is suitable for growing fish during the March, April and May period, which means fish normally harvest in the Southeast in May can now be left until June, giving customers access to consistently-sized fish every week of the year. Bender said.

Based in Hideaway Bay near the mouth of the Huon River, Huon Aquaculture is Australia's second-largest producer of Atlantic salmon, supplying both national and international markets with a consistently high-quality product.
