Russia's cattle numbers fall 0.9 percent
Russia's cattle numbers in June fell 0.9 percent on-year to 22.6 million, the state statistics service reported Monday (June 23, 2008).
The report comes as an increasingly affluent population is consuming more beef.
The number of cows fell 1.1 percent to 9.4 million while the number of pigs fell 1.4 percent to 17.2 million.
The proportion of cattle kept by the population on small private holdings increased to 48.2 percent from 47.5% a year ago, pigs fell to 43.3 percent from 43.7 percent.
The remainder are on large-scale farms.
Russia's cattle numbers in April was 22.4 million, a 0.3-percent drop from last year.
