Louisiana signs new bills to boost seafood sector

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal on Friday (June 18) signed two bills into law to bolster the state's seafood industry and help maintain the quality of Louisiana seafood.

The first bill aims to help shrimpers and shrimp processors participate in a new certification program being developed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. A portion of the funding associated with the Louisiana Artificial Reef Program will be used to support the Louisiana shrimp industry.

The second bill authorises the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to develop certification standards for Louisiana seafood, including shrimp, and directs approximately US$800,000 annually toward the certification programme.

According to the law, all seafood products marketed as certified Louisiana Wild Seafood must meet all criteria and requirements set in the department's rules. Any product sold or attempted to be sold under the programme that does not meet the requirements will be removed from the market.

The law also requires programme participants to apply to the department for a participation permit, which may be revoked or suspended for violations.
