New African Swine Fever cases confirmed in Philippines' Capiz province

The outbreak in Roxas City, Pontevedra and Panitan marks the first resurgence on Panay Island since 2023, with authorities attributing the rise to weather fluctuations.

The Capiz Provincial Veterinary Office in the Philippines has confirmed new African Swine Fever (ASF) cases in Roxas City and the towns of Pontevedra and Panitan, more than three years after a spike in cases was last recorded on Panay Island in 2023.

Blood samples tested positive for the virus at the Regional Animal Diseases and Diagnostic Laboratory under the Department of Agriculture, according to an advisory released by the Capiz Provincial Veterinary Office on 19 June. The office attributed the acceleration in cases to weather fluctuations.

The Capiz Provincial Veterinary Office is implementing biosecurity measures at affected farms, including disinfection of farm premises, equipment and transport vehicles. Farmers are required to report suspected cases to the nearest agriculture and veterinary offices, and the trading or selling of deceased pigs has been prohibited due to ongoing contamination risk.
