Canadian Olymel plant closes due to animal health situation

The Red Deer Olymel plant was closed this morning to hog shipments due to "an animal health situation," a Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) media relations person said.

CFIA official Guy Gravelle said the agency is conducting tests and hope to receive results as early as Tuesday (June 22), noting that until that time, there will be no movement of animals into the Red Deer Olymel plant or products out of the plant.

He said there are no indications of any risks to human health.

Earlier in the day, truckloads of hogs were being turned away from the front gates. Truckers at the scene said they were not being told anything about why they were not allowed to drop off the livestock.
