Mexico to allow corn imports to produce biofuels

Mexico will allow corn imports to produce biofuels, as a law limits the use of domestic food crops to make fuel, the government said Thursday (Jun 18).

The partial or total use of imported corn for the production of biofuels will not require a permit from the agriculture ministry, according to new rules published in the official gazette.

Mexico forbids the use of corn to produce alternative fuels if it interferes with the food supply, with the use of food crops allowed only if there are surplus, said the official gazette.

Mexico produces mostly white corn for human consumption, and imports US yellow corn largely for animal feed.
