Brazilian chicken exports up 39.4 percent in May

Brazilian chicken export volume totalled 273,980 tonnes in May, up 39.4 percent on-year, according to the country's chicken exporters' association ABEF.

The export value registered US$408.7 million, up by 85 percent compared with the same period last year.

From January to May, chicken export volume rose 22.6 percent on-year to reach 1.282 million tonnes, while the export value was up 41.3 percent on-year to register US$1.747 billion.

ABEF attributed the relatively better export performance in May to the fact that bird flu outbreaks in Europe and Asia during the same period last year had dampened chicken consumption.

The association expects Brazil's chicken exports in 2007 to total 2.85 million tonnes, up 5 percent on-year. Export value is forecast at US$3.42 billion, up 6.8 percent on-year.
