US lab to use new test for bovine viral diarrhoea virus

Developed by a German company, a new highly sensitive test for detecting bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) has been adopted by the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL).

The test is able to identify and differentiate both persistent infection and transient infection, the two types of BVDV in cattle.

Governmental reference laboratories in Europe report that the test can detect all 68 referenced strains of BVDV, including atypical European and American strains such as HOBI and H138 strains.

KSVDL Director Dr Gary Anderson expressed excitement that the laboratory is the first establishment in the US to provide the test to veterinarians and producers in Kansas and surrounding states.

The BVDV test components have been submitted to the USDA for sale and distribution approval.
