Argentina's grain output to hit historic high

Argentina's grains and edible oil output is expected to reach a record high of 84 million tonnes this year, up by 20 percent from last year, the Argentine government said.

This expected grains output, worth US$12.2 billion, is 24 percent higher than the average annual output for the past five years.

Increased productivity and competitiveness also led to higher production of other cereals like corn and soy. Argentina is one of the world's main wheat producers and second largest producer of GM foods.

Exports of grains, edible oil and related products are expected to account for 35 percent of Argentine total exports this year.
