Australia sees growing popularity in poultry

In a recent survey of nearly 11,000 Australians by specialty chicken retailer Lenard's, it is revealed that more consumers now prefer chicken over the more costly beef and pork.

Over 57 percent of respondents said they intend to save or 'pay off debts' and are turning away from luxury meats such as beef, pork and lamb, and buying more chicken meat as times get tougher.

More than 54 percent believed chicken is the best-value-for-money meat, as they consume the meat on an average of 2.3 times per week. Only 25 percent believed beef represents the best value.

The survey also showed 82 percent of respondents perceiving beef, lamb and pork products as luxury food items.

Consumption of beef, lamb and pork products has dropped in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to research from the Meat and Livestock Association (MLA).
