Record grain prices motivate EU farmers to expand planting
The rising grain prices in the global market has encouraged EU farmers to expand acreage allocated for grains by 6 percent, the EU statistics agency Eurostat said Thursday (June 19, 2008).
With this, grain production is expected to rise by 10 percent to reach 284 million tonnes this year.
Nearly all principal grains harvested in the EU would see rises in production and area this year, the agency said.
Corn output was projected to rise by 17.6 percent to 56.7 million tonnes while wheat production is expected to reach 123.7 million tonnes.
