Qatar's Doha destroys over 2,000 crates of eggs
The Doha municipality destroyed more than 2,000 crates of eggs at various retail outlets across the city last month as they were found to have expired but were still being sold by unscrupulous stores.
Inspectors from the food monitoring unit of Doha Municipality conducted routine inspections on more than 3,300 foodstuff outlets and eateries across the city last month and detected a number of violations.
Of the nearly 180 violations detected, three were quite serious and these outlets were closed temporarily as a punishment.
Aside from fresh eggs, many other food items were found by the civic inspectors which were not fit for consumption as their validity had expired. The municipality destroyed some 486 tonnes of these items. The inspectors also conducted checks on a number of butcheries and confiscated large quantities of meat that were not fit for consumption.
In all, some 18 tonnes of meat were destroyed by the municipal officials. Among the outlets inspected for irregularities were shops selling fresh chicken and fish as well.
