Mekong Delta farmers expect to harvest 2.23 million tonnes of aquaculture products in 2010, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The output consists of 1.61 million tonnes of fresh water aquatic products, with tra fish being the majority of 1.25 million tonnes and 620,000 tonnes of saltwater and brackish-water ones, the ministry said.
Of the saltwater products, prawn shrimp will account for 62%, or 386,400 tonnes, the ministry added.
To meet the targets, the provinces will earmark 790,000 hectares of water surface to the aquatic breeding, including 550,600 hectares of prawn shrimp; 28,300 hectares of white-leg shrimp and mollusk; and 194,000 hectares of other fresh water species.
The region has harvested 900,000 tonnes of aquaculture products since early 2010, meeting 41% of the whole-year plan.
