China confirms new bird flu outbreak in Guangdong
China's agriculture ministry disclosed Tuesday (June 17, 2008) that bird flu has been detected in the southern province of Guangdong.
A total of 3,873 ducks died from bird flu in Guangdong's Yashan village and 17,127 more were culled, the government's official Xinhua news reported.
The ministry said emergency quarantine has been set up to curb the effect of the virus.
Earlier this year, several outbreaks of H5N1 bird flu were reported in at least four other areas of China.
Hong Kong officials also detected the bird flu virus last week in poultry markets, leading to the slaughter of thousands of birds.
