Dutch supermarkets to end sale of castrated pigs without sedation

Dutch supermarkets' association CBL says it will stop selling meat from pigs that have been castrated without sedation in the Netherlands beginning 2009.

According to the CBL, it is "out of time to make piglets suffer like this" as piglets were still castrated up until now in the Netherlands to prevent boar taint in carcasses at slaughter.

The proposal was favoured by the Dutch Party for the Animals that occupy two seats in Dutch Parliament.

CBL also announced that there will also be certain requirements for sustainable and responsible catching of fish.
