India's Gujarat state authorities vaccinate cattle against anthrax

Health officials in India's western Gujarat state began administering antibiotics to cattle after a sample from a dead cow tested positive for anthrax.

Over the past week, seven cows have died in Bagdana village in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, about 250 kilometres south of the state's main city Ahmedabad, according to a report from the PTI news agency.

Authorities have begun vaccinating cows as a preventive measure to people who kept cattle in the vicinity of their homes, said Bhavnagar district collector Pradeep Saha.

About six to seven teams of doctors went door-to-door to administer the vaccines to the animals, said Saha.

He said the vaccine would be administered to all animals, which were more than two years old.
